Inspiration

This inspiration of making a hard material look like a soft fabric served as the goal of the project. Sculpted cloth on figure sculptures has always blurred the line between real and inanimate. The sculpted cloth drapes and contours over the figure revealing the form. The cloth is folded and pulled to look lightweight and soft.

Inspiration

3D motion software has opened up a new path of creative work. Software like Cinema 4D and Maya can generate and render visually stunning artworks. Inspiration for this project comes from the organic forms created by 3D artists. These forms have fluid textures and materials that convey motion even as an image.

Approach

Materials ranging from leather pieces to nylon meshes to cotton blends were selected and studied. Each material was wrapped around the fast in different orientations and reviewed against the inspiration. Every arrangement of cloth on the fast was photographed and used as a reference sketch.  Through ideation, the pulling and stretching of cloth was preferred over the draping of cloth.

Ideation

After several explorations in sketching and fabric study, some key take aways were noted. Designs with full draping did not show movement and felt bulky. Cloths that were pulled back were preferred as this showed more of a reveal to shoe. The most compelling idea came from the integration of the Swoosh extending past the shoe and stretching the fabric for the reveal.

Molded Foam

With the objective of this project, making hard material look like cloth, the “cloth” in this shoe is molded foam. This foam extends from the outsole to the top of the heel. An marble pattern was also added calling back form its inspiration.
