3D motion software has opened up a new path of creative work. Software like Cinema 4D and Maya can generate and render visually stunning artworks. Inspiration for this project comes from the organic forms created from these programs.

Ideation

The approach of the project was two fold; pull 3D inspirations from images and videos, and use 3D software as part of the ideation process. Areas of interest were highlighted and noted for further exploration. Quick sketches helped inform potential application of the inspiration to footwear. Two main design aesthetics were pulled from the exploration; a bio caged sole and a liquid textured upper.

3D Exploration

As part of the design objective, further exploration was done in Cinema 4D. C4D is a powerful program that can manipulate and deform shapes, apply complex texture to surfaces, and generate physics to models to test structure. In Cinema 4D, a fast was model and used as a template for exploration. Dozens of ideas were applied to the model and critiqued.

The final model was 3D printed. Having the ability to see and hold the form helped ideate the form further. At this stage, the main focus was to design and integrate the Swoosh into the organic form.

Each sole is interchangeable based on user’s preference of firmness as well as wear and tear of sole.

Molded Support

Molded support plates fill into the gaps of the sole and onto the upper. Extra support is laid onto the top of the upper to provide tightness.
