Inspiration

The objective of this project was to design an athletic sneaker with a bold and modern graphic design language with typography and stylistic elements. Bold large typography was the driving inspiration for the design. Incorporating strong typographical elements to the design achieved a modern aesthetic for the concept. The stylistic bar elements in graphic design add structure and interest in simple areas can be coupled with the logo mark to tie it all together. The following images were inspiration for the concept.

3D motion software has opened up a new path of creative work. Software like Cinema 4D and Maya can generate and render visually stunning artworks. Inspiration for this project comes from the organic forms created by 3D artists. These forms have fluid textures and materials that convey motion even as an image.

Ideation

With the graphic inspiration in mind, rough sketches allowed for exploration of translating bold typography and graphic design elements to a sculptural form of a sneaker.

Tape Up

A tape up was constructed to progress the graphical elements further. A “kit of parts” were designed in Adobe Illustrator and printed out. These parts along with different material were taped on to the surface of the tape-up. Each iteration helped inform the placement and colorway of the final design

Final Design

The final design focused attention on the Nike logo and branding and three main sections; the swoosh on the lateral side, the loop on the upper strap, and the medial logo lockup. The Swoosh on the lateral side is broken up with a vertical bar similar to the inspiration. For the upper, a strap is utilized instead of laces. This strap creates a canvas for additional graphics including a loop with a folded swoosh. The medial side includes a full Nike logo under a translucent material.
